Transformative Justice

Orev is a facilitator for both Restorative and Transformative Justice - in community spaces as well official capacities with law enforcement as a process of abolition.

Orev’s understanding of social isolation and incarceration is not the result of an isolated instance of harm called “a crime”, but as part of a psycho-social constellation which links colonization, white supremacy, sexism and misogyny, homophobia and transphobia, racial capitalism and other forms of violence into a multi-faceted system of oppression.  This oppression shows up in our bodies and relationships as reactive behaviours we later regret. There is always an option for repair - whether or not the people we’ve harmed wish to engage with us, we can find accountability through several pathways.

Transformative Justice occurs when we create space for each other to heal, become accountable and feel deep connection and belonging to ourselves and community.  It is rooted in Indigenous wisdom, and draws on the awareness that harm has many faces, and healing from harm involves a journey of personal, social and political change.  One tool we use in Transformative Justice are Circles. Circles allow for a non-carceral approach to violence and harm that has been perpetrated and experienced.  Circles are rooted in asking questions, listening and having time to share in authentic and vulnerable ways.  Circles can generate healing on personal, familial and community levels.

Orev’s approach to the work of spirit within a Transformative Justice framework is threefold:

1.

Perceiving and understanding the whole system of violence and our role in it.

2.

Acknowledging our role in harm, and how our liberation is bound up in one another.

3.

Freeing ourselves and people we care about by safely increasing honesty, connection and engaging in meaningful repair.
